Contrasting colors is important when picking a color for your decal, you need to decide where you want to put your decal.  Take a good look at the surface and the surrounding areas decide if it's a dark surface or light surface.

Contrasting colors is the difference between light and dark colors. When your decal contrasts with your surface, it makes it easier to read, easier on the eyes, and looks better.

If your surface is a window that is dark and heavily tinted. Using a black decal would make it hard to see. You would want to pick a white, or a light color for your decal.

For example, Yin Yang has good contrast between black and white. However, if you look at the border on the dark side, it's hard to see as it blends into the background.

You want to choose a color that is going to stand out against the background that you're putting your decal on.

That doesn't mean you have to stick to just black and white.  You can definitely change it up with your color choice. However, the contrasting dark and light still have to be taken into account.  You don't want to choose a decal color that is going to blend into the background.
